Genesis 1:26-27
Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, according to our likeness. They will rule the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, the livestock, the whole earth, and the creatures that crawl on the earth." So God created man in His own image; He created him in the image of God; He created them male and female.
God creates all things and invites us as his image bearers to represent him through careful stewardship of what's been entrusted to us.
1 Corinthians 16:1-2
Now about the collection for the saints:
Do the same as I instructed the Galatian churches. On the first day of the week, each of you is to set something aside and save in keeping with how he is prospering, so that no collections will need to be made when | come.
Our giving to God should demonstrate that His kingdom is our highest value.
God does not get our leftovers but the first and best.
Matthew 23:23
"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You pay a tenth of mint, dill, and cumin, and yet you have neglected the more important matters of the law— justice, mercy, and faithfulness. These things should have been done without neglecting the others.
Jesus mentions tithing while challenging his listeners to not miss the focus of God's word: lived obedience before
God. We believe 10% is a great starting point but that we should always pray,
"God, are you getting my first and best?"
Matthew 16:13-20
When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, "Who do people say that the Son of Man is?" They replied, "Some say John the Baptist; others, Elijah; still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets." "But you," he asked them, "who do you say that I am?" Simon Peter answered, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God. " Jesus responded, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but my Father in heaven. And l also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overpower it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will have been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will have been loosed in heaven." Then he gave the disciples orders to tell no one that he was the Messiah.
Jesus said that the gates of hell would not prevail against the church. We believe every Christian should give their first and best to their local church for the advancement of the gospel here and around the world.
Matthew 6:21
Forwhere your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Jesus said where our treasure is, there our hearts will be also. Biblical generosity guides our hearts to care about what truly matters: the advancement of God's kingdom.
Matthew 6:24
"No one can serve two masters, since either he will hate one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.
Greed is a "passion to possess what is not ours" (Randy Alcorn). When we give our first and our best we weaken sinful idolatry and desires that pull on every human heart.
Matthew 6:19
"Don't store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal.
All of us are making investments in this world. When we invest in eternity we ensure that the temporal resources we have will make an impact forever.
There are many other ways to give, including non-cash gifts, estate giving, and more.
